THE PROBLEM
Access to mental health support is limited, especially for those who face barriers to traditional care. Many people struggle with depression and anxiety but lack resources or feel disconnected from conventional treatment options.
THE SOLUTION
Mental Jam founder Michelle Chen (RMIT University PHD graduate) is developing mobile video games co-created with people who have lived experience of mental health challenges. These games, like Bobarista, use storytelling, visuals, music, and interactive minigames to foster emotional literacy and coping strategies. The characters are designed through community workshops to ensure authenticity and diversity.
THE POTENTIAL IMPACT
Mental Jam could democratise mental health support by making it more accessible, engaging, and relatable—especially for younger audiences and underserved communities. It also promotes mental health literacy and empathy through interactive storytelling, potentially reducing stigma and improving early intervention.
