WHO IS QUANTUM BRILLIANCE?

Quantum Brilliance (QB) specializes in the design, fabrication and manufacturing of small diamond quantum devices. QB’s mission is to enable the mass deployment of quantum technology. With a proven track record in quantum hardware production, QB has deployed its quantum accelerators to supercomputing facilities in Europe, the USA, Australia’s Pawsey Supercomputing Centre and also recently winning a multi-million contract with German’s Cybersecurity Agency.

THE PROBLEM

Quantum technologies hold enormous potential for the future, both to supercharge computing power as well as increasing sensitivity of devices and sensors by more than a thousand times. At the heart of using quantum technologies is trying to locate, control, and measure individual atoms that are moving 300-400 metres per second in random directions. To reach the benefits we want from using quantum technologies, we will need to control anywhere up to 10,000 of these atoms all at once.

Technologists have been using a special property within quantum diamonds called nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. These tiny defects in the diamond's structure can act as quantum bits, or qubits, the building blocks of quantum computers. The amazing thing about NV centers is that they can work at room temperature, unlike other quantum technologies that either require extremely cold conditions, complex lasers or fragile vacuum chambers. This makes them much more practical for real-world applications.

By harnessing the power of these quantum diamonds, device developers are developing quantum sensors with incredible sensitivity, lunchbox size quantum computers capable of solving complex problems beyond the reach of GPUs or CPUs, and even new medical imaging techniques. This diamond-based quantum technology holds the promise of revolutionizing fields like medicine, materials science, and artificial intelligence.

Despite the above market opportunities, there is a gap in the value chain of diamond quantum technologies. This gap is access to both quantum diamonds and device components of consistency, quality and functionality at sufficient volume.

THE SOLUTION

Quantum Diamond Foundry (QDF) will address this gap by providing services and products to be positioned as the one-stop shop for integrated quantum devices. QDF will establish itself as the leader in quantum diamond solutions by supplying commercial grade diamond materials and core components of quantum diamond chips that serve diamond quantum technology.

Quantum diamond has a wide range of potential uses across quantum computing, sensing and networking. Their mass deployability, small size, light weight and ability to function entirely at room temperature give them a significant advantage over other quantum technologies in certain use cases.

Notably, these advantages are particularly beneficial for applications requiring large-scale deployment, reliable performance in everyday environments or harsh conditions, and seamless integration into existing infrastructure.

IMPACT FOR VICTORIA

The investment will see Victoria become home the world’s leading diamond quantum foundry and sustain the Research Hub for Diamond Quantum Materials that QB jointly established with La Trobe University and RMIT University in 2022, which was underpinned by Breakthrough Victoria’s first investment in QB.

The design and fabrication of quantum diamond devices will strengthen local expertise in the growing quantum technology sector, help expand a burgeoning local quantum industry, produce highly skilled employment opportunities domestically, and accelerate Victoria as a world leader in diamond quantum technologies.
